Jerome Holtzman, 1926-2008

Filed under: Baseball, Chicago — jjm @

We were a Chicago Tribune house growing up north of Chicago. It was a good time for the Tribune - Mike Royko had come over from the Sun-Times, as had Jerome Holtzman, the “dean” of baseball writers. Holtzman was inducted into the writers’ wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989, and after retiring from the Tribune in 1998, he joined Major League Baseball as its official historian.

Holtzman passed away on July 19. Paul Sullivan of the Tribune covers his impact in this article. While not unexpected, it’s still a sad day.
