Post-Manny

Filed under: Baseball — jjm @

Once upon a time, major league baseball had players like Rick Reuschel - pudgy, pear-like, effective. Accessible to the everyman, perhaps.

Then, there came men of startling muscle and definition. Brady Anderson, one-time-only 50-homer season (more than 2x his nearest total), being a well-known example. Nomar was another who seemed comfortable shirtless.

13 years later, we have Manny, now the source of many punchlines (scroll down or skip to Late Show of the Week).

Which gets to the inimitable Matt Stairs, beefy, accessible figure (listed at 5′9″, 222 lbs) and his take on Manny:

“People are going to have to stop taking this health bullshit and go back to being chubby and having fun.”

Which reminds me of my favorite Mark Grace quote. Grace, caught sipping a beer and having a cigarette after a game, was allegedly scolded by a journalist, and responded, “Ma’am, I’m a ballplayer, not an athlete”.

Long live the 16″ softball physique.
