The Ballad of Mark Prior

Filed under: Baseball, Chicago — jjm @

The saga of oft-injured Cubs pitchers Mark Prior and Kerry Wood has reached near-Odyssean proportions. The latest installment - Mark Prior being shut down for 2007 following right shoulder arthroscopy. Which chapter of the Odyssey does this correspond to? Will our heroes ever make it back home?

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, with more than a hint of don’t-let-the-door-hit-you-on-the-way-out, says this is curtains for Prior in Chicago.

I prefer BrokenNewz’ take (in February 2004!) on the subject.

My favorite Cub injury is still Sosa’s sneeze-induced back injury (what really happened?), but I do wonder if Prior would have gone on the D/L if in range of that sneeze.

In Wood & Prior, we thought we had the second coming of Schilling & Johnson. To paraphrase Casablanca, we’ll always have 2003.
