The Scribe Behind the Curtain

Filed under: Culture, San Francisco, Silicon Valley — jjm @

A chance encounter at Mission Creek Cafe in the Mission led to conversation with one of the bloggers behind the curtain at Gawker site-to-be Valleywag.com, which will focus, as the name indicates, Silicon Valley gossip. A budding Wonkette in our midst! How very San Francisco! I look forward to seeing the dish.

Apparently being a professional blogger is not a particularly easy or lucrative gig, according to our man in the know. You need to churn out a minimum of 12 posts per day at a Gawker site. That basically means never leaving the house, or at least your laptop, as far as I can tell. Days of IM, email and cellphone calls no doubt whiz by. This for print-level editorial compensation, which I remember well from days past. Hopefully honoraria start to roll in after a while.

It was nice to meet our man behind the curtain. That particular stretch of Valencia is littered with cafes catering to the nattily-but-casually-coiffed, Mac-equipped Web 2.0 cadre.
